3 HOUR CLASSES | Sketching & Painting Santa Fe is designed to make it easy for you to have an art experience.
All materials are supplied, including packaging your finished artwork to travel home with you. Locations are easily accessible and transportation can be arranged.
Where are classes held? What if there’s bad weather? How long are the classes?
In good weather, three-hour classes are held in scenic locations between five and ten minutes by car from the downtown plaza. Settings are beautiful and historic and include mountain views, incredible skies, Southwestern terrain and vegetation, and adobe houses scattered near and far. Studio classes, where we work from photographs of the landscape, are also available year round. Directions to various locations will be given to you upon registration.
What are the times and fees for the classes?
In warm weather, small group classes are generally scheduled on Friday mornings. The tuition for a small group class of three or more, is $175 per person . Fees for private classes are higher, but still very reasonable. With advance notice, a private class can be scheduled during your time in Santa Fe. Inquiries about discounts for returning students and scholarships are welcome. Bring a friend and both save 10%.
What art materials are provided?
Materials offered to you for your class are a set of 32 pastel half sticks to keep, sketching materials, a variety of papers and blending tools, surfaces to work on, and packaging of your artwork to return safely home with you. Instruction on how to use all materials is supplied, as well as written handouts for you to keep. Additional media may be available upon request. Jane has chosen pastels for these classes because they are easily adaptable to sketching and pastel painting. Pastels are direct and forgiving with rich, vibrant color that is excellent for interpreting the Southwestern landscape.
Are there classes for young children or teenagers?
Motivated adolescents generally can join in with the adults. Young children also enjoy classes with Jane, and a variety of materials (including clay) can be used. Sometimes these classes are shorter in duration, and fees are adjusted accordingly.
Can we arrange a private class as a gift for family members?
Jane specializes in classes for family groups, couples, grandparents bonding with grandchildren, single dads on vacation with their kids, sisters and girlfriends getting together, and classes on holidays. If you are a working mother getting quality time with your talented 12 year old on Spring Break or four sisters, two nieces and the matriarch of the family all together….consider spending time together in a creative way. You will learn something, have fun, create memories in picture form, and bond in a new way.
How do we arrange Sketching Santa Fe for larger groups? Is the tuition discounted? What is the largest number of people you can accommodate?
Groups of ten or more receive a 10-20 percent discount from the small group fee. Depending on the size of the group, there may be a charge for studio space. Jane will consult with you on the needs and character of your group, and will arrange an appropriate time and location. The goal of the class is for participants to have fun creating their own unique memories of Santa Fe in picture form.

Jane Shoenfeld's love of nature underlies all of her painting. This video includes her large studio abstractions, vivid plein air pastels, and a new series of paintings in response to poetry about global climate change and species demise. The film beautifully weaves short recordings of poetry, shots of the artist in her Santa Fe studio, and superimposed images of the actual landscape.
